Vaaranam Aayiram - Music

After days of dog's life in office, I was not at all excited when I received a call from Score Magazine that I am one among the "Chosen 25" to have won an invite to vaaranam Aayiram Audio launch. Being a function from the director of "Chennaiyil oru mazahikaalam", Lord Varunaa chose to waterwash the otherwise dry and hot city and I was again one of the Chosen luckies to get drenched.

As usual the programme started late and as a cost-cutting measure director Gautham menon did the compering as well. Naresh Iyer, Devan and a guitarist were on stage performing live relevant to the celebrity walking to the dias. Guess what, as told by Gautham, they played "Smack that" the original version of Pollaadhavan's "Minnalgal koothaadum" when the heroine stepped on the stage. The album has seven songs and each song was introduced by a celebrity. The songs were instantly catchy and sounded youthful.

Except for a gaana styled song, Harris has not done any pathbreaking experimentations. It is his same old style of compositions wherein there is minimal and right usage of instruments and perfect blend of melodies laced with femalish singing of male singers.
Apart from all these cliches, the songs are very much enjoyable and peppy.
Thamarai's lyrics are worth a mention and Na. Muthukumar has penned lyric for a song which requires english words and Thamarai had refused to bring in english words.
Bombay Jeyashree, the usual ingredient of Gautham-Harris Jeyaraj combo albums is replaced by Sudha Ragunathan and she has given her best for the 60s styled "Anal mele" song. The song reminds of black and white classics and HJ's very own recent melodies."Mundhinam" and "Nenjukkul" are sure to be chartbusters and instantly steal the listeners' hearts. "Adiye Kolludhey" is already a hit, though has its own inspirations. Sruthi Kamalhassan sounds a bit amateurish.

After the disappointing album "Sathyam", Harris is back in form and in style with "Vaaranam Aayiram", which I would rate as one of his best and recent albums this year.
