Dasaavathaaram Music Review

After the long wait, finally the music album of Dasaavathaaram’s music has been released with great pomp and show. Jackie chan flew in to Chennai and the event was graced with other big shots of the industry like Big B and Mamootty. With A.R.Rahman backing out due to lack of dates or for whatsoever reasons, the opportunity fell in hands of Himesh Reshammiya, the then sensation in Bollywood. There has always been a lot of harsh criticisms for Himesh’s music, though most of his albums were instant hits. Himesh’s debut album in tamil “Bommalaattam” gave creeps to Kamal fans.

Let us see what’s in offering from Himesh for Dasaavathaaram…

“Kallai Mattum Kandaal” – Supposed to be shot during the era of serious tussle between the disciples of Shiva and Vishnu. The song pops up when Vishnu follower Kamal is executed by the king, who orders the statue of Lord Vishnu to be thrown in sea along with Kamal. Writing in praise of Vaishnavism has been a piece of cake for Vaali and he excels in this song with his clever choice of words. There are cryptic meanings as well, such as bringing in the names of Kamal’s real life parents in the lines

“ராஜலக்ஷ்மி நாயகன் ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் தான்
ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் சேய் இந்த விஷ்ணு தாசன் நான்"

Hariharan has given his best to bring in the emotions, the song deserves and with all the chantings, the song is a real treat. Though not appropriate to the period and tamil culture the tune is catchy and instantly likeable. But its shocking to know that it is a straight rip from a Malayalam song (find it here).

There is nothing more to write about the “Ka Karuppanukkum” and “Ulaga nayagane” and the “Skip” button can very well be used. “ Oh Oh Sanam” – the song to be picturised on the Sikh character Kamal has a cute and addictive tune. Kamal’s vocals and Vairamuthu’s lyrics add magic to the song. Set in the typical Himesh’s style, this song will steal the hearts of North Indians for sure. There is also a remix version of this song by Himesh which again calls for the “Skip” option.

“Mugunthaa Mugunthaa” – Once again Vaali impresses with his beautiful descriptions of the ten avatars of lord Vishnu. Being sung by Sadhana Sargam, it has got a passing resemblance with “Konjum Mainaakale” at some places. Looking at the CD inlay details giving credit to Sadhana and Kamal for this song and when the listener starts wondering, Kamal startles everyone by singing in voice of a old lady.

A lot more depends on the appropriate and grandeur picturisation of the songs. Box office status of the movie will also significant in deciding the fate of songs.

Himesh has not disappointed as in Bommalaattam, but could have avoided the lift in “Kallai mattum” and the whole album could have been less noisy.

Kuruvi - Music Review ??!!!

Vijay holds the credit of importing telugu movie culture into tamil filmdom with his striking yellow-pink costumes, 'dan-danakka' kuthu songs and often remaking the whole telugu movie.

Kuruvi is no exception.

Dhaam Dhoom - Harris Jeyaraj's new offering

I always look forward to release of a new HJ's album. He gives due respect to the lyrics and music does not dominate the words. With good recording quality, not being loud and noisy, Harris songs have a special kind of magic and reach the audience of all age group.

"Dhaam Dhoom" is the fourth directorial venture of Jeeva and its really sad that he is no more. "Dhaam Dhoom" songs are not in the league of the previous HJ-Jeeva combo , like 12B, Ullam ketkume and Unnaale unnaale.

If you are ready to forget the inspiration sources such as the prelude of Swadesh's 'Yeh Tara', Ratchagan's 'Kaiyil midhakkum' and "Bombay theme", you will enjoy the "Aaliyile" song by Haricharan. Being a slow paced melody number, a lot depends on the picturisation to tie the audience in place. The lyrics with pure tamil words are definitely commendable.

"Anbae en anbae" crooned by Harish Ragavendra is a typical HJ song with his stamp all over. A clean melody with soothing background and is a winner.

"Sakiye" enhanced greatly by vocals of Bombay Jeyashree and Krish is interesting and instantly likeable. "Thikku thikku" again brings back flooding memories of many Rahman's and HJ's older compositions.

The famous Ketchup song is being reworked as “Pudhu Pudhu” which is a toe-tapping number sure to be lapped up by youth. Bored with lifts from Rahman’s and other international albums, looks like HJ has decided to reuse his own "Andangaakka" from Anniyan in "Uyyalaalo".

With each song reminding us of some previous compositions, Harris Jeyaraj gives wonderful exercise to our memory.

Save American College (from becoming a Hogwarts!)

If you were a student of “The American College”, Madurai you need no descriptions. If not, speak with any current student or alumni of the College to understand the bond and the unmistakable pride they have developed being an American collegiate. It is one unique place in Tamilnadu where the professors and students share a very casual and friendly relationship, unlike its contemporary institutions.

It’s disheartening to read about the recent happenings in the most prestigious institution. Check out the news coverage in The Hindu. No one with an intact mind would think of erecting a shopping mall and petrol bunk in the place of college’s playground.

Doesn’t the current situation of American college reminds us of the plot in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” ?- where the Ministry of Magic takes control of Hogwarts school and the headmaster Dumbledore is replaced with heartless Umbridge arbitrarily imposing strict rules and regulations and punishing those who disobey her rules. Its time to act and defend our college from the dark affairs.

Please help by spreading this message across to yours friends and peers. There is every possibility of some prime areas within the institution to be
sold off for monetary gains. To prevent this, it is time that we acted
unitedly and quickly to defeat these evil designs.

Dasaavathaaram - Story & Photos

நீங்க கமல் தசாவதாரம் னு நினைச்சு வந்தீங்கன்னா

நான் பொறுப்பல்ல !!!! இந்த மாசம் அப்படி...

:-)

The ten most famous incarnations of Vishnu are collectively known as the 'Dasavatara' ('dasa' in Sanskrit means ten). This list is included in the Garuda Purana (1.86.10-11) and denotes those avatars most prominent in terms of their influence on human society.Vishnu exists as the Creator and also within every being as our soul, our Supreme. He also enters or descend to our world in the form of Avatar whenever his presence is needed.

Avatar as described by Krishna: Whenever there is a decline of religion, and a rise of irreligion, I incarnate myself. To protect the good, to destroy the wicked, and to re-establish religious principles, I appear in every age ---( Bhagavad Gita )

The Ten Avatars or Dasaavathaaram of Vishnu are important and very interesting as you can see that he incarnates progressively from fish to human form.

Yaaradi Nee Mohini - Review

With younger brother Dhanush in lead role, elder brother Selvaragavan's story and screenplay and produced by their sister Dr.Vimala geetha - Yaaradi Nee Mohini is a 100% family subject.

Its high time Dhanush woke up and look for different roles, as we are getting tired of seeing Dhanush in this "Good-for-nothing" youth who suddenly comes up in life role. Nayanthara has graced the movie with her alluring screen presence, though in a few scenes she looks a bit elder to Dhanush. Raghuvaran, though has not much scope to perform, has given his best and makes us feel for his sudden demise.

The plot is not new to tamil cinema but Selva has given excellent treatment to the script and presented with style.

The songs have been picturised with good efforts and taste. Young audiences are sure to end up with sprain in neck, thanks to Ragasiya’s pelvic grind in the “Oh Baby” song. Cinematography is flawless in both urban and the rural locale except for the blue-screen backgrounds, supposed to be shot in Australia, which being very much conspicuous, is a great let down.

Yuvan's background score backs up the movie and the songs glue the audience to seats. D.Imman has duly spoiled the remix of yesteryear classic from “Vietnam veedu” with jarring noises. Canning the movie has been a cakewalk for Mitran Jawahar having the support from his mentor Selvaragavan and strong technical crew.

Salute RPF

Happened to travel in Pandyan express from Madurai to Chennai. Memories of "Fire in bhogi" during my last trip to madurai, kept haunting and held my sleep at bay. While I was dropping into the void between wakefulness and sleep,
a Policeman woke me up and handed me a bit of paper. I woke up with a start, wondering what did I do to get a ticket / fine.

In a gentle tone, the policeman greeted me and handed over a piece of paper with information about his name, grade and cell number. He informed that he is assigned for the particular coach and in case of any emergencies, he can be reached at any time.

On reaching chennai, I remembered the above incident vaguely and the printed slip in my pocket proved that I had not been dreaming...

Hhmmm.. Keep up the good work.. Southern Railways
