Wake up Indiaglitz !

Dhinathanthi is one generous daily, that appreciates each and every movie that hits the theatres. Their movie reviews will be real funny with all the superlatives for undeserving films. Indiaglitz follows the Dhinathanthi's trail and their music reviews are really comical. If you go by Indiaglitz's Music review, every album getting released is a musical hit and they heap all praises over each and every album.

Reading the Music Review of "Satham Podathey", I really wonder if these guys really listen to the songs and come up with a review or by looking at the list of songs on CD cover, they write a generalised writeup based on their assumptions....

The first song of "Satham Podathey" album 'Azhagu kutti chellam' is a sweet melodious song set in a situation where the hero spends a day babysitting. Na.Muthukumar has come out with beautiful and meaningful lyrics, with poetical description of all that are associated with a baby.

Following is the excerpt from Indiaglitz's Music review of "Satham Podathey"

"Azhagu Kutti Chellam (Shankar Mahadevan)

With Shankar Mahadevan around, there is no dearth for energy in the song. A romantic number, where the hero describes his love for a girl, is very catchy."

Enna kodumai sir idhu? And the irony is, Indiaglitz is the official media partner of "Satham Podathey"

Kudos to the Indiaglitz's policy of employing "Hearing impaired" people to write music reviews! :-)

Satham Podathey - Audio Release

Going by the lines of the movie's title , Yuvan spoke very little and his music did all the talking.

v The veteran director K.Balachandar was brisk and active inspite of old age. KB appreciated Yuvan saying that the songs are peppy and even he felt like dancing. He said, if not for his old age, he would like to work with Yuvan for his film.

v Chennai-28 fame (Cricket commentator role) "Badavaa" Gopi compered the function and kept the audience in splits of laughter by his jokes and funny introduction of the stars

v Each song was introduced by two stars, reading the opening lines and a music director would prime the song by giving 1,2,3, 4. The stars and the music director stayed back on stage while the song was being played live, and gave their comments after the song.

v Jeeva and Priyamani were continuosly chatting on stage not at all listening to the song played, and heaped the song with praises.

v Each and every celebrity mentioned that Yuvan is their favourite music director.Guess thats what they would say about each music director during their audio releases

v Sudha Ragunathan's voice somehow sounded odd and did not fit the western style fast paced song. She said her entire family loves Yuvan's music and that's why she agreed to sing for him.

v It was good to see all the young music directors (Vijay Antony, G.V. Prakash, D.Iman, Srikanth Deva, Devi Shree Prasath) interacting with each other without any ego and appreciating Yuvan open heartedly.

v Hats off to Devi sri Prasath for spotting the talent of the drummer on the stage and appreciating him specially.

v The entire team of Chennai-28 including its director, producer were present and were hanging around the parking lot even after the function was over.

v Premgi, sporting the black "Batman" Tshirt (the same one, he wears in Jalsa song) was the centre of attraction.

The Grudge

How many of you reading this have watched the horror flick "Grudge" ? The film has the common ingredients of a typical horror movie with a plot of people moving into a 'haunted house' and its after effects. There are very few sightings of the ghost actually and the ghost doesn't look grotesque and frightening too. Still the movie is sure too shake the nerves out of you. The eeriee feeling stays along even after watching the movie leading to auto-generation of apparitions. That's the success of this particular horror movie that wakes up the dormant fears of your childhood.

One fine no moon night, I went back to sleep after watching the second part of Grudge...
Image of Maida-white creature with long black hair kept flashing in my mind, even with my eyes wide shut. Though I am used to sleep alone, suddenly I felt very much alone and the distant chorus of stray dogs barking kept me awake.

It was exactly 12 O clock and I repented for checking the time at that odd situation.
Suddenly the dogs' chorus had stopped and all I could hear was my heart thumping against ribcage and my breathing. Wait. wait.... I can hear another breathing sound along with mine....
I began to break a sweat. Even when I try to hold my breath and listen, I can listen to a wheezing type of breathing sound.

Human brain is an irritating "Search Engine" that brings back memories exactly when not intended. I was reminded of the scene in Grudge where the actress feels the presence of something in that house and she hears a "breathing noise".

I made a complete research looking for the source of the sound, but all in vain. I didn't sleep a minute that night and the next day I looked like having an after-party-hangover with drooping eyelids. I sought for my friend's advice and that silly stinker had blew up the fear in me rather than helping me to overcome it.

The night had come and I braced myself awaiting the glimpse of the you-know-who. Unknowingly I fell asleep, and woke up with a start, thanks to a grotesque night mare show my brain had screened specially for me. The time was exactly 12 and of course I could hear the breathing sound and I had to turn on the music system to mask that sound. Then only it dawned on me that, I had left my bike in the road itself and I had to park it inside.

Gathering all my available guts, I went outside and what I saw, almost froze my breath.
A stray dog had come inside and had developed the habit of sleeping on the slab of my bedroom's window. I couldn't see it from house through the netlon. That stupid wheezing canine would never have forgotten the fright I gave it while shooing it away.

Well... Its my Grudge....

Awaiting albums in tamil

In Shankar's "Boyz", there's a dialogue by Vivek " Udane Aappam venumnaa podalaam, aana album podarudhu avvalavu easy illai".

Likewise a private music album requires the following ingredients to become successful,
. Creative & fresh concept
. Pleasant music going by the theme
. Good lyrics
. Grand picturisation & Effective marketting

Private albums are very successful in Bollywood and new albums keep flooding the audio market there.Though there are many number of private albums in tamil too, not even one can be named a run away successful one.

Rahman's "Vande Mataram" was of course famous, thanks to the hype created by media, timely release during 50th year of Independence, Sony's marketing, Bharathbala's advt. like quick scenes and wide angle picturisations. Though the album had a few gems like "Only you", "Tauba tauba", they never made to the limelight except for the song shot at the most dry place of our country, thereby projecting a dry picture of India to the foreign audience. I still wonder how did Bharathbala chose those locations leaving out all the scenic green locations in our country.

Even Yuvan's "Blast" really went blasting inspite of best brains involved in the project such as Kamal, Sujatha, Nagoor Haneefa, Unnikrishnan etc.

Ilaiyaraja and Rajeshwar (director of Amaran, Seevalaperi paandi, Kovilpatti veeralakshmi etc. ) conceptualised an album with concept of Patriotism and proposed that all the prominent singers of the country would come together for a song. And alas! misunderstanding between Raja and Rajeshwar lead to premature cancellation of the project.

Only a few songs from private albums like "Vaalpaarai" by Malgudi Subha, "Ussele" by Srinivas were popular for a while.Various new projects of albums by A.R.Rahman and Yuvan are in the pipeline and let's see how they will turn out to be.

I wish people like Shankar, Selvaraghavan, Ameer should take up a project of Private album and only then we can expect a successful album in tamil

Melting moments by Raja - Guru Ramana Geetham

How many of our fellow music fans would have heard or heard of "Guru Ramana Geetham" - an Ilaiyaraja's devotional album dedicated to Lord Shiva and Ramana Maharishi?

"Guru Ramana Geetham" released in 2004 , is definitely in league with Raja's previous devotional album on Ramanar - "Ramana Maalai". Raja has written lyrics for all the songs and it is amazing to know that he has even written two keerthani in Sanskrit.

The album starts with "Chinna payyan oruvan", biography of Saint Ramanar condensed and packaged in a 5 minutes song. Raja goes on describing various interesting incidents in Ramanar's life and the song takes off to a soaring pace while singing the last stage of the holy Saint and is sure to bring tears in eyes of listeners.

Remember Raja singing a few lines of "En ooru Sivapuram" during the release function of Thiruvasagam? Wonderfully crafted philosophical lines in magical voice of Raja is a treat to the ears and is thought evoking.
Other songs like "Ippirappil enna seidhen", "Ennai kavarndhizhutha","Enge sendraalum", "Arunaachalaa" have been tuned to perfection and in contrast to other devotional songs genre.

"Annamalaiyaar mel" is a variety song which can only be conceived and performed by the musical genius. Here he lists all the disciples of Lord Shiva who had visited Thiruvannamalai. The tune is not at all in a standardised format of pallavi and charanam and is more of a narratory tone and yet stands alone by Raja's varna mettu unleashed.

Some interesting facts about the album:
  • Raja has strictly instructed the producers not to advertise or market the album. Only the people who are really interested and destined will get it and enjoy
  • The songs have been Mastered at Rahman's Panchathan Recording Inn, Chennai
  • Though all the songs are written, composed and sung by Raja, two Sanskrit keerthanai, also written by Ilaiyaraja are rendered by Unnikrishnan and Bombay Jeyashree.

"Hell"met

வெளியே தலை காட்ட முடியல

With the Agni natchatra Sun boiling the Whatsoever contents of the head, wearing helmet to work is like being grilled in an oven or a rehearsal for the punishments in Hell.

Now we get the drift of how a chicken would feel while going "Merry-go-round" in a microwave.

Though I am not a helmet dealer, I appreciate the bold and necessary step of Government in implementing the rule of compulsory helmets, considering the Safety factor. Considering the Sales factor, the helmet sellers are more than happy and here is where the concern of false "ISI" brands and the hike in price rises.

Saree clad pillion riders perching in traditional Indian position with helmets looks a bit weird. This position causes banging of helmets of the rider and pillion rider whenever sudden brake is applied and is definitely a funny scene to watch.
