Now Showing @ Sathyam Cinemas

Watching movies in theatres is definitely an enjoyable experience, but for answering the nature's call in the toilets there. Thinking of visiting loo during cinema hall intermission, you are sure to be flooded with memories of the nauseating stench of pungent ammonia odour cocktailed with cigarette smoke.

One among the reasons I love Sathyam Cinemas is their "No Smoking" policy within the entire campus and their well maintained (thats an understatement) toilets.
In Satyam, not only while you empty your wallet, you are sure to be entertained even as you empty your urinary bladder. Yes, they have installed LCD monitors playing slideshows above each and every urinal. The slideshows usually include the movies currently running. So, naturally they come with the big caption, " NOW SHOWING".

It was well-timed, when my friend stared at the monitor while urinating and commented , "Yeah, Now Showing" .

"Hey Ram" - Revisited

"Hey Ram" is one of the best movies made so far in India and is two decades ahead of its time of making. My hunt for a decent DVD of "Hey Ram", ended yesterday in madurai.

When I read somewhere that Kamal refused to release or handover the rights to soundtrack of the movie, being too possessive over the top notch background score Raja had exclusively crafted for him, I decided to rip the BGMs myself.

The film deserves an award for each and every department right from casting, script, direction, art direction, cinematography, costumes, choreography to music.

When geniuses collaborate, the effect is something beyond description by words and many scenes conceived by Kamal and elevated to new heights by Raja, gave me goosebumps.
I have uploaded one such scene from the movie ...

Is he really worth it?

Right from early 90s, we are used to his young &childish voice, that regulared in many of his maternal uncle A.R. Rahman's albums . In 2006, he reappeared in TFM as a music director in Shankar's "Veyil", which had a couple of hit songs that made heads turn towards him.

His uncle's fame did both good and bad to this young chap. Stars shone brightly on him that he got opportunities to score music for youthful and music oriented subjects. "Kreedom" & "Oram Po", were projects that sounded more than this young guy could chew, and he came out with a few brilliant compositions here and there. "Pollaadhavan"'s box-office results and Yogi's remix song got him the fame and name he never deserved. Not to forget the clever lift of "Minnalgal Koothaadum" from "smack that".

Simbu teamed up with him for his "Kaalai" which turned out to be a disaster. Again he had lifted "Sivaji" Mottaiboss theme for an image build up song in "Kaalai".

His songs for Prakashraj's "Vellithirai" got appreciations inspite of the songs bearing too much of resemblance to his uncle's previous compositions. Then came the shocker that "Sooriyane" song was a note-to-note copy of Keith Urban's "Somebody Like You". These instances of
copying before reaching a double digit count of movies, is really disheartening.

Scoring music for Superstar Rajni's movie is every composer's dream and GVP is damn lucky to have bagged the chance to compose for "Kuselan". Yuvan's tussle with Selvaragavan proved lucky to G.V.P that he replaced Yuvan for Selva's "Aayirathil Oruvan".
Lets keep aside all the sky-high expectations mounted on him and see how this whiz kid delivers with such meaty subjects in pipeline.

Then we will know, if he is really worth it...

Love letter to an IT girl !

While grazing through my earlier writings published in Nilacharal, I stumbled on this funny love letter I'd written to an imaginary IT girl.

True to the lyrics of Boyz's 'Girl friend' song
"Friends ஓட கவிதைகள் வாங்கி என்னோட கவிதைன்னு சொல்லி இதயத்தில் இடம் ஒன்று பிடிக்கத்தான்", this piece of writing had been several times (mis) used by my friends to woo their girl friends :-).

JPEG format
MPEG format

Music is Life - Short Story

I am an addict. Yes, addicted to music.

What if God gave lids only to the eyes, my ears are always plugged with earphones.
Living in this ever fast-forwarded mechanical world, I love fast-paced and peppy numbers. Melody is so boring. People around me can get the drift of the song I listen to, by the beats spilling out of my earphones.
Listening to my favourite latest pop album, I am thinking of my olden days, when I used to listen to songs in Srilankan radio broadcasts, friday night's 'Oliyum oliyum', recording audio cassettes. Then there was CD and now everything's compressed into iPods. I feel like having the whole music world in my pocket.

The thumping beats and full blasted vocals made my blood boil and I can feel a
mild ecstatic surge of adrenaline. With all the fresh morning air blowing on my face,
caressing my hair, I feel like flying on the air.I feel as if I have been teleported to some
other planet in some unnamed galaxy.

Hey hey hey........

Suddenly everything went blank....
and mute...

I wake up... surrounded by so many people...
My dress is soaked in some fluid...
Wait! its red in colour...
While drifting back to void, I heard an oldman mutter to another guy " These young
chaps! he didn't notice the lorry coming around the corner blasting the horns and even
the pedestrians shouted to warn the boy, Psst..."

Again.. I drifted to dark and silent world.....

Someone in white dress is playing harp....
Mmmm... I like this melodious piece of music...
..........................................................................................................................................................................
Written in interest of youngsters driving with earphones, turning a deaf ear towards the
traffic and danger around

Omni Bus

Yaaradi nee mohini - bit songs

At last, managed to get the 3 bonus tracks of "Yaaradi Nee Mohini"
and here I share it with you all fellow fans (Click on the title of tracks to download them)

Recent Update: Click here for more BGM pieces from the movie and versions of "Engeyo paartha mayakkam" song in Karthik & Naveen's voice.
Barring the awful tamil pronunciation, Udit is definitely a good choice for this song.

1. The person is the loser - Yuvan crooning ; part of BGM score

2. Podhum Podhum - One of my favourites from Yaaradi nee mohini's telugu version

3. D.Imman's remix of "Paalakaattu pakkathile" - Sounds very amateurish, isn't it?

Na.Muthukumar's Repeat...

Na.Muthukumar is one of the promising lyricists in the field and has all the potential to overtake all his contemporaries with his stylish writings. Especially, he comes out with his best for Selvaragavan-Yuvan combination (which we are going to miss in the forthcoming project of Selvaragavan.) Just as some of our music directors reusing their own tunes , Na.Muthukumar has a tendency to repeat his own wordings. Still standing on the early rungs of his career ladder, Muthukumar should avoid this rehashes of his own songs.
